Greece 2021

The Greek revolution in 1821 secured the nation an independent national home, after many centuries of submission to foreign conquerors. The Revolution of 1821 was a national movement, which developed during the last decades of the 18th century and the first of the 19th, although its origins go back to earlier times.
The Greek National Polygenesis, as the Greek National Movement was called, was related to the national movements of the same period that developed in Italy and Germany - which constituted Italy and Germany respectively - to the British colonies in North America - which formed the United States of America- as well as in revolutionary France. The Greek national movement aimed at the liberation of the nation, the formation of an independent nation-state and the establishment of an organized state. Characteristics that were formed and appeared under the influence of the political messages emanating from the already revolutionary France.
One of the main components of the idea of the Greek national movement were:
a. the promotion of the Greeks of the time as descendants and heirs of the ancient Greeks, their history and their culture,
b. the identification of Greeks with other Europeans,
c. the differences and generally the distinction of the Greeks from the Ottoman Turks,
d. the tyrannical Turks behavior of the conquerors.
e. the right of the Greeks to claim within their homeland their liberation from the illegal rule of the Turks and to establish an independent and favored state.
The Revolution of 1821 was provoked by the "Filliki Eteria". It was a secret organization founded in 1814 by three Greeks, three insignificant merchants and secretaries. Along the way, important and active executives entered the organization, conspicuous Greeks with influence in Greek society. These patriots wanted to create the right atmosphere that would ignite in the hearts of the Greek slaves the flame for the independence of the homeland so that when the opportunity arose, a general revolution of the Greeks for the liberation of the homeland from the Ottoman Turks would begin.
The patriots tried to catechize as many Greeks as possible. Through important Greek personalities who held power in the Russian Empire they tried to secure the support of Russia as our religious beliefs were identical but were completely opposite to the Ottomans. This was not possible because it was considered to be detrimental to Russia's interests. They believed that a Russian aid would most likely turn the great European powers of the time against it. On the other hand, the great European powers did not take kindly to the revolutionary ideology, they did not support upheavals and ruptures with legitimacy.
The Greeks were definitely alone in this endeavor and the worst thing was that there were no funds available to support the struggle after so many centuries of slavery. Revolutionary outbreaks were provoked by the apostles of the Friendly Society in many parts of the Ottoman sultan, in order to achieve a general uprising in every area inhabited by many Greeks. The Greeks with their decisions and actions set fire to the European possessions of the sultan. The savagery with which the sultan reacted to the provocation of the Greeks prevented the possibility of a peaceful confrontation and judged the beginning and the outcome of the revolution.
The Greeks on March 25th 1821 finally raised the flag of the revolution with the cross everywhere. They proclaimed their decision to fight for their freedom with the well-known slogan "LIBERTY or DEATH". With meager money, almost no military equipment and no outside help, they proudly raised their stature to the tyrant conqueror. They made history with their blood, gaining the esteem of Europe, much of which at that time was already enslaved or openly threatened by the Ottoman Empire. An act of courage and heroism that turned the eyes of strong Europeans to Greece and inspired many peoples around the world. An act that influenced the Enlightenment and provoked public opinion about the failed venture. The Greeks with their heroic battles proved once again that it is the cradle of civilization, the birthplace of democracy and the illuminator of human freedom.
