Visiting Greek Monasteries: A Quick Guide

Dress Code Monasteries are active, sacred places of worship; therefore, modest attire is required for both men and women.

  • For Women: Shoulders must be covered, and legs must be covered down to the ankles or at least below the knee. Long skirts or dresses are preferred. Avoid tank tops, off-the-shoulder shirts, or shorts.
  • For Men: You must wear long trousers. Shorts are almost universally forbidden inside the main church buildings (Katholikon). Sleeveless shirts are also not allowed.

Tip: Many popular monasteries (like those at Meteora) provide wrap-around skirts or shawls at the entrance for those who arrive unprepared, but it is best to carry your own light scarf or shawl just in case. 2.

Visiting Hours

Most monasteries follow a monastic schedule that prioritizes prayer and community tasks.

  • Typical Schedule: Most are open from 09:00 or 10:00 until the afternoon.
  • Afternoon Break: Nearly all monasteries close to the public for a few hours in the afternoon (usually between 13:00/14:00 and 16:00/17:00) for the monks' rest and private prayer.
  • Closing Time: They generally close by 17:00 or 18:00.

Important: Always check the official website or call ahead. Small, non-touristic monasteries may have very limited hours or may close unexpectedly for internal religious reasons. Try to arrive at least an hour before closing time to ensure you have enough time to visit.
