Meteora is one of Greece’s most extraordinary UNESCO World Heritage sites and a globally renowned destination for its geological wonders and historic monasteries. Towering rock formations rise dramatically above the Thessalian plain, creating a breathtaking landscape that feels almost otherworldly.
HISTORY AND MONASTERIES
Monastic life in Meteora began in the 10th century, when hermit monks sought spiritual isolation atop the rocks. Today, six monasteries remain active: Great Meteoron, Varlaam, Roussanou, St. Stephen, Holy Trinity and St. Nicholas Anapafsas. These monasteries preserve invaluable icons, frescoes and centuries-old religious treasures.
