Mystras is one of the most significant Byzantine monuments in Greece and a UNESCO World Heritage site. This fortified medieval city, built on the slopes of Mount Taygetos, features palaces, monasteries, Byzantine churches and breathtaking panoramic views over the Spartan plain.
HISTORY AND SIGNIFICANCE
Founded by the Franks in the 13th century, Mystras soon flourished under Byzantine rule as the capital of the Despotate of Morea. It became a major center of culture, theology and arts. The last emperor of Byzantium, Constantine Palaiologos, was crowned here in 1449.
WHAT TO SEE
The site is divided into Upper and Lower Town. Highlights include the Palace of the Despots, the Cathedral of Saint Demetrios, the beautifully preserved Pantanassa Monastery, Brontochion Monastery and the Church of Agia Sophia. Restored buildings and cobbled paths recreate the atmosphere of a medieval Byzantine city.
VISITOR EXPERIENCE
Mystras offers an excellent combination of history, architecture and natural scenery. Exploring its paths, admiring the panoramic views and visiting the Byzantine monuments makes it an unforgettable cultural experience.
